Big titles on the way

-
What a time to be a gamer... there are so many games coming out we don't know where we'll get the time to play them! A lot of big games have recently had release dates spilled, so let's have a look at what we can look forward to...

An under the radar DS game that deserves your attention is coming in October called Nostalgia- a Japanese RPG in the style of Final Fantasy and Golden Sun. Nostalgia is being made by Matrix Software, the guys behind Final Fantasy III and IV DS- so these guys know their stuff. Look out for this one, it's gonna be huge.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was a massive hit on the DS, and it looks like it's going to be even better on the PSP when it's released in October. Featuring redone graphics, music and new missions to fit the advanced hardware of the PSP, this one is looking fantastic.

It's been in development for five years, but it looks like Final Fantasy XIII is almost here. Recently confirmed for release on December 17 in Japan, it's also been finally confirmed for an English release in early 2010. It's gonna go fast though- so pre-order now to save yourself the disappointment of missing out!

PSP Minis to take on the App Store

- Sony Computer Entertainment
On October 1st, the new PSP model goes on sale; the PSP Go. That's not all though, current PSP users can expect to find a new section of the PlayStation Store open to them called 'PSP Minis'. This new section will offer small downloadable games at a very affordable price-point, a similar structure to the iPhones App Store. This isn't only a great opportunity for us to play some great new games rather cheaply, but also a great opportunity for developers.

Sony have stated that they're "very interested" in releasing the PSP SDK (software development kit) for free to users- meaning that anyone from hobbyists to professionals can now try their hand at developing for the PSP, and maybe even have their creation put on the PlayStation Store for the world to see!

We can't wait for this, it's gonna breathe some new life into the PSP and from what we've seen so far, it looks great. Look out for it on October 1st.

Head back to Liberty City again, again.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars - Rockstar
We honestly weren't expecting this. Rockstar Games recently announced that the Nintendo DS game Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be coming to the PSP later this year. Chinatown Wars became somewhat notorious on the DS, not for controversial reasons like say, San Andreas, but because many people thought an MA rated game for the DS wouldn't sell well, and they ended up being dead wrong.

So now it's coming for the PSP as both a downloadable title on the Playstation Network, and as a good ol' fashioned UMD disc as well. There hasn't been any talk yet on a release date, price or indeed how the touch-screen stuff will work (if it's even included), but we do know that it will have updated graphics, lighting effects, animation, and new missions and characters. Chinatown Wars was a fantastic game, so the fact that now more people will be able to play it is great! We're looking forward to this one.

More videogame films on the way?

-
Videogame films are a strange thing, it seems like no matter how hard filmmakers try, they can never seem to make a decent one. That may be because the makers have never played the games they're trying to adapt, but we suspect they're just out to make a quick buck- which is a shame, as there are many games with stories worth telling that could make good movies.

The obvious choice here would be Metal Gear Solid (although some might argue it's more of a movie than a game already), so why haven't they made a film of this yet? Well according to recent rumours, there's actually a Metal Gear Solid film currently in the works, apparently starring Christian Bale and Daniel Craig as Solid and Liquid Snake respectively. Strangely enough, this doesnt sound like such a bad idea. Bale can pull off the gruff voice of Snake, and Craig can do the cocky British accent Liquid is known for. Sounds good- a shame the rumor will probably be proven false though.

In other video game related film news, Universal Studios recently bought the rights to the game Asteroids, and plan to make a film of it. I'm going to repeat that: Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Atari game Asteroids, and plan to create a film about it.

Wait, what?

Yeah, it's strange. Of all the videogames out there, they chose Asteroids, that old arcade game where you have to rotate the little ship to shoot chunks of rock. It's hardly Hollywood material, but at least it doesn't have an established story for them to ruin.

I guess all we can do now is sit back and wait for the inevitable videogame tie-ins, like Metal Gear Solid: The Movie: The Game. My head hurts just thinking about it.

Dantes Inferno for Playstation Portable

EAs Dantes Inferno tells an adapted story that focuses on delivering a blockbuster 3rd person action game experience while bringing Alighieris depiction of Hell to the medium. Players assume the role of Dante, who descends into Hell after returning home to find his beloved Beatrice murdered, with Lucifer seducing her soul into the underworld. Dante sets out on a rescue mission to save Beatrice, but he soon realises he is also in Hell to face his own demons and ultimately to redeem himself.

Players will take Dante through nine unique circles of Hell as mapped out and described by Alighieri: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. Each circle will showcase its own distinct look, with demons, monsters, damned and geography that are crafted straight from the poems vivid descriptions.

To take down the demons of Hell, Dante is outfitted with two primary weapons: the Scythe he takes from Death and the Holy Cross given to him by Beatrice, which has spiritual powers that will help Dante collect souls and spells from the creatures he defeats on his journey. The game also features a deep upgrade system so gamers can customise their abilities to their specific gameplay style, something theyll need as Dante comes face to face with Hells fiercest beasts and bosses. If successful, Dante will be able to tame certain beasts, exacting their will and turning Hells punishments back on itself.
