More videogame films on the way?

-
Videogame films are a strange thing, it seems like no matter how hard filmmakers try, they can never seem to make a decent one. That may be because the makers have never played the games they're trying to adapt, but we suspect they're just out to make a quick buck- which is a shame, as there are many games with stories worth telling that could make good movies.

The obvious choice here would be Metal Gear Solid (although some might argue it's more of a movie than a game already), so why haven't they made a film of this yet? Well according to recent rumours, there's actually a Metal Gear Solid film currently in the works, apparently starring Christian Bale and Daniel Craig as Solid and Liquid Snake respectively. Strangely enough, this doesnt sound like such a bad idea. Bale can pull off the gruff voice of Snake, and Craig can do the cocky British accent Liquid is known for. Sounds good- a shame the rumor will probably be proven false though.

In other video game related film news, Universal Studios recently bought the rights to the game Asteroids, and plan to make a film of it. I'm going to repeat that: Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Atari game Asteroids, and plan to create a film about it.

Wait, what?

Yeah, it's strange. Of all the videogames out there, they chose Asteroids, that old arcade game where you have to rotate the little ship to shoot chunks of rock. It's hardly Hollywood material, but at least it doesn't have an established story for them to ruin.

I guess all we can do now is sit back and wait for the inevitable videogame tie-ins, like Metal Gear Solid: The Movie: The Game. My head hurts just thinking about it.

E3 2009: News from Sony

- Sony
After the amount of stuff we had seen at the Microsoft and Nintendo conferences, it was hard to see how Sony could compare- and we think Sony's presenter felt the same way! But he didn't need to be nervous, they had an impressive show as well. The rumours of a new PSP model were true, as Sony announced the PSP Go, the fourth iteration of the handheld, and the first major redesign. The PSP Go can do all of the same things as a regular PSP, but it has a slide out form factor and no disc drive. The reason for the lack of UMD support is that Sony is pushing digital downloads as the way of the future, and with the PSP Go's 16GB of internal memory, this is an attractive idea for people who don't like having to carry discs around with them everywhere. It isn't meant to replace the current PSP though- it and UMD games will still be available in stores. As for games, we got a very impressive look at MAG, a MMO shooter exclusive to the PS3, where 256 people can play online at once for some amazing battles. They also showed off Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and of course God of War III. Square-Enix showed off some more of Final Fantasy XIII and then shocked everyone by announcing Final Fantasy XIV at the same time!

As for PSP games, Gran Turismo PSP was finally revived from development hell and is to be released this October. The game features all the GT regulars like outstanding graphics, and over 800 cars and 35 tracks- it looks really impressive. Also announced was the PSP exclusive Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker- a prequel which tells the story of Big Boss and his establishment of Outer Heaven, the lead up to the original Metal Gear game. Assassin's Creed and Littlebigplanet PSP were also shown off, and both look fantastic so far.

So that's it for our brief E3 wrap-up, there was so much new stuff that we couldn't possibly fit it all in here, so we gave you the highlights of the show. Hopefully some new games were announced that got your attention- because they sure have ours! See you next month!

Silent Hill Remake In the Works

Silent Hill: Shattered Dreams - Konami
Or “reimagining” as Konami puts it. Komani have announced ‘Silent Hill: Shattered Dreams”, a Wii, PS2 and PSP reimagining of the first Silent Hill game, which released on the PS1 so many years ago.

"This is a reimagining of the first Silent Hill,” explains producer Tomm Hulett. “It’s not a remake or a port. That’s an important distinction. It really feels like a new game. One of Shattered Memories’ most significant and intriguing additions - your answers actually affect how the game unfolds. And it doesn’t end there. The game 'watches' you constantly, and your behavior throughout can determine when you’ll meet certain characters, which scenes you’ll witness, and a variety of other factors”, says Hulett. “In Silent Hill games, the town always gets inside the protagonist’s head. But now, it’s getting inside YOUR head.”
Sounds interesting to us! No release date has been announced yet, but we’ll keep you posted with any news.

Shadow of the Colossus: The Movie

Shadow of the Colossus -
Sony Pictures is apparently working on a silver screen adaptation of the critically acclaimed Playstation 2 game ‘Shadow of the Colossus’.

Apparently Justin Marks, who wrote ‘Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li’, is writing the script.

“I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film. And despite the game's somewhat "artsy" cred, they're hoping Shadow will be a Lord of the Rings-style fantasy tentpole.”

It was also mentioned that the film is only in the very, very early stages of development "very far from actually making it to the big screen." So maybe it won’t happen in the end, who knows.
On the one hand, Shadow of the Colossus is an amazing game, but on the other, it would probably make a very average film. It will be interesting to see what comes of this, we’ll keep you posted.
