STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Activision
After a long time of waiting, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is finally available. If you ask us, the wait was worth it- but there were some who weren't willing to wait, and they have paid dearly for it.

Activision-Blizzard and Infinity Ward have been taking theft of Modern Warfare 2 very seriously. A couple of weeks ago, leaked copies of the game appeared on several internet auction sites such as eBay- long before the game was actually released. Activision hired private investigators and tracked down the seller and discovered a scheme to sell pirated copies of the game at inflated prices, as well as a much larger network of people profiting from selling stolen and burned copies of Modern Warfare 2

Activision have also vowed to keep track of anybody found downloading the game from bit torrent networks or any other internet file hosting services and have assured us anyone found guilty of doing so will be punished to the full extent of the law. Yikes! Looks like they're taking this very seriously- so don't illegally acquire Modern Warfare 2 or Activision (and the police) may just come knocking on your door.

Another one bites the dust

Risen -
Well would you look at that, another game has been banned in our fair country, bringing the count for 2009 up to three- the first two being Necrovision for its violence, and Sexy Poker for its use of nudity as a gameplay incentive. The latest game to be banned is the upcoming PC and Xbox 360 RPG Risen. In the game, you can act violently towards both enemies and allies, you can engage in sexual activities, and you can buy and sell drugs- all elements that no doubt contributed to it being banned.

Which is fair enough on its own, but the fact is that there are many other games on the market that contain all of these elements (read: Fable II- rated M), so why has Risen been banned? The Classification Board hasn’t actually given a reason yet, but the content of the game doesn’t sound any worse than anything already out there. You can buy and sell drugs in GTA: Chinatown Wars and you can engage in sexual acts in Fable, Mass Effect, The Witcher and many more- and just about every videogame ever has some sort of violence in it. We can’t help but wonder what made Risen so much different- but until the Classification Board releases a statement, wondering is all we can do.

The next big MMORPG...

Final Fantasy XIV -
The big new MMORPG on the horizon now is Final Fantasy XIV, and it’s already shaping up nicely. The game throws many conventional RPG elements straight out the window- we wonder if it will pay off in the end.

Strangely, Final Fantasy XIV doesn’t use experience points or a levelling system. The crutch of the game is the Armoury System- which is used to change your characters class just by changing what gear they have equipped. Skills are learned via equipment, so it’s very easy to make a mixed class if that’s how you want to play. Also worth noting is that no quest in the game has a required amount of participants. You can take on any job by yourself if you wish- which is great for people who don’t have a lot of time to play every day- most quests are brief enough for one to finish by themselves in about 45 minutes.

Final Fantasy XIV is fast becoming our favourite upcoming MMO, everything about it looks fantastic. Final Fantasy XIV will be released for PC and PS3 sometime next year.

More videogame films on the way?

-
Videogame films are a strange thing, it seems like no matter how hard filmmakers try, they can never seem to make a decent one. That may be because the makers have never played the games they're trying to adapt, but we suspect they're just out to make a quick buck- which is a shame, as there are many games with stories worth telling that could make good movies.

The obvious choice here would be Metal Gear Solid (although some might argue it's more of a movie than a game already), so why haven't they made a film of this yet? Well according to recent rumours, there's actually a Metal Gear Solid film currently in the works, apparently starring Christian Bale and Daniel Craig as Solid and Liquid Snake respectively. Strangely enough, this doesnt sound like such a bad idea. Bale can pull off the gruff voice of Snake, and Craig can do the cocky British accent Liquid is known for. Sounds good- a shame the rumor will probably be proven false though.

In other video game related film news, Universal Studios recently bought the rights to the game Asteroids, and plan to make a film of it. I'm going to repeat that: Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Atari game Asteroids, and plan to create a film about it.

Wait, what?

Yeah, it's strange. Of all the videogames out there, they chose Asteroids, that old arcade game where you have to rotate the little ship to shoot chunks of rock. It's hardly Hollywood material, but at least it doesn't have an established story for them to ruin.

I guess all we can do now is sit back and wait for the inevitable videogame tie-ins, like Metal Gear Solid: The Movie: The Game. My head hurts just thinking about it.

Machinarium for PC

Machinarium is a puzzle video game developed by Amanita Design. The goal of Machinarium is to solve a series of puzzles and brain teasers. The puzzles are linked together by an overworld consisting of a traditional point and click adventure story.

The overworlds most radical departure is that only objects within the player characters reach can be clicked on. Machinarium is notable in that it contains no dialogue, neither spoken nor written. The game instead uses a system of animated thought bubbles.

Fight as, or against ancient history's most legendary generals including Julius Caesar, Hannibal and the rebel Spartacus. From the Punic Wars against Carthage to the death of Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome, control mighty armies of up to 10,000 fully polygonal, highly detailed, motion-captured warriors clashing in panoramic real-time battles. At your disposal are hundreds of different troop types including legionaries, hoplites, barbarian hordes, war elephants, gladiators and scythe chariots to colossal war machines such as siege towers, battering rams and catapults hurling flaming missiles. The stage is set for carnage on more than 10,000 unique battlefields based on the topography of Europe and North Africa.Conflict is not the only way to gain favor with the senate and people of Rome, however, as politics, diplomacy the gladiatorial games will play key roles in your quest to be declared Imperator.Dominate and reign over one of the most powerful empires in historyRome Total War: Barbarian Invasion ExpansionThe expansion moves the action on 350 years to a time when the Roman Empire is in deep trouble, beset by enemies inside and out, and possibly even dying. The year is 363 AD, and the Roman Empire has split into two parts ruled from the cities of Rome (for the Western Empire) and Constantinople (for the Eastern Empire). If this werent bad enough, barbarian tribes have been massing on the Imperial frontiers in Europe for many years. In the East the Empire faces a renewed threat from the Persian Empire, under new vigorous rulers, the Sassanids.Barbarian Invasion starts just after the last Emperor of a unified Rome has died. His successors in Rome and Constantinople are now uneasy allies and rivals for power. The barbarians are massing along the borders, and in some cases are living inside what used to be Roman territory. There are many, many challenges for a Roman to face - and some may be almost unbeatable!New Factions: * Fortunately, you dont necessarily have to play as the Romans! Barbarian Invasion includes 10 brand new playable factions, (and some more that youll get the chance to meet during the game). * Eastern Roman Empire - the rich part of the Roman World, and now reverting to a more Greek and Eastern outlook than strictly Roman. Their heavy cavalry is frightening indeed. * Western Roman Empire - under the rule of a strong Emperor there is the chance that Rome could become the centre of the world once again. The Legions may have changed, but they are still potentially powerful! * Huns - When Roman envoys finally met Attila the Hun they were horrified - the Huns were a new breed of warrior who live in the saddle and could ride and fight all day! * Goths - An ancient people from the Baltic, the Goths struck fear into their enemies thanks to their habit of sacrificing captives to Tyz, the war god. * Vandals - Their name is still a byword for wanton destruction! * Saxons - Unlike the other German tribes, the Saxons didnt look southwards to expand. They look seawards, and westwards towards the rich province of Britannia, creating the idea of England in the process. * Franks - The Free Men are a Germanic tribe of fierce warriors, famed for their steadfast infantry and their utterly dangerous throwing axes. * Allemanni - Although held off by the Romans over many centuries, the Germanic Allemanni people are now on the rise again. * Sarmatians - A fierce warrior people from the steppes, the Syrmatae rule the lands to the north of the Black Sea. * Sassanid Empire - The Persian Empire has waxed and waned over the centuries, but in the Sassanid dynasty its rulers are vigorous and strong. New Game Features: * Barbarian Hordes - A barbarian faction can flee en masse from an attacker and take its entire people in search of a new homeland. * New Units - New factions means new units! This means that there are plenty of new tactical tricks to discover, strengths to play up, and weaknesses to exploit! Every faction in the game has a signature unit that is unique to them, such as the axe-throwing Francisca Heerbann of the Franks to the ultra-heavy Sassanid Clibinarii cavalry. * New Special Abilities - Some units in the game have new special abilities. The Shield Wall allows barbarian elites to lock themselves into a defensive stance and withstand frontal attacks. The Schiltron is a defensive hedgehog formation for spear-armed troops - great for withstanding cavalry, but very vulnerable to missile fire. Swimming allows light troops to cross rivers and flank defenders who think they are safe at one end of a bridge or ford! * A modified technology tree - allows barbarians to build and expand larger settlements. It also includes new buildings to reflect the changed importance given to religion at this time in history. * A new campaign map - Europe and the Empire have changed after 350 years of Roman rule since the end of the main Rome: Total War campaign. The new map reflects the shifts in population and wealth that have gone on. * Religion - is now an important factor. Christianity has become the dominant religion of the Empire, but its your choice whether or not to revert to paganism in the hope that this will bring victory. * Generals - can now be recruited as well as adopted into the family. There are also new vices and virtues as well as ancillary characters for generals retinues. * Rebellions - can now flare up into full-fledged civil wars. Your generals can decide that they would make better kings or emperors than the current rulers and take matters into their own hands! * And goodbye to the Senate! That old favourite enemy of Rome: Total War players everywhere is now a toothless talking shop with no power over the fate of the Empire. Instead: worry about the Huns!
