New Zelda on the way- will use Wii MotionPlus

- Nintendo
Since its release, there really haven't been a huge amount of games that really take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus add-on, but it looks like that might change soon. The big bosses of Nintendo have been whispering recently about the upcoming Wii instalment of the Zelda series, and it seems that they're doing their best to incorporate Wii MotionPlus technology into it.

In a recent Q&A session in Tokyo, Shigeru Miyamoto (the mastermind behind the whole Zelda franchise) mentioned how the developers are "using MotionPlus to make you feel much more like you're actually fighting while holding a sword in your hand. In the previous game, you aimed at things by pointing at the screen, but this time we'll use MotionPlus to create a much more convenient targeting system and a more pleasurable playing experience."

Fair enough, but we can't help but wonder if the fans will be happy about this. Many of us here were less than impressed with the amount of waggling required to play Twilight Princess, so we're a bit unsure of how to feel about this, but we're sure it will be a quality title nonetheless. Zelda games usually are, and we can expect to see this one sometime in 2010 if we're lucky.

More strange Wii peripherals to come?

- Nintendo
If you thought the Wii Vitality Sensor (the thing you put your finger in to measure your pulse) was the weirdest idea Nintendo had ever come up with, you haven’t seen anything yet.

The latest Wii add-on from the warped minds at Nintendo is a (yet unnamed) inflatable seat. That’s right. It has a small slot on it for you to insert the Wii Remote into, allowing you to hold the Nunchuk while you sit on the seat. The patent listing describes “a raised hand for balance as in Bronco riding, a lasso, a sword or other weapon, etc.”

Right. We’re not sure what to make of this at this point. Seems a bit weird to us, but that’s Nintendo for you. Their crazy ideas always work in the end, so this will probably be no different. It’s just hard to see what they’re trying to do with this. When Nintendo comes out with what they’re planning, we’ll be sure to let you know!

More videogame films on the way?

-
Videogame films are a strange thing, it seems like no matter how hard filmmakers try, they can never seem to make a decent one. That may be because the makers have never played the games they're trying to adapt, but we suspect they're just out to make a quick buck- which is a shame, as there are many games with stories worth telling that could make good movies.

The obvious choice here would be Metal Gear Solid (although some might argue it's more of a movie than a game already), so why haven't they made a film of this yet? Well according to recent rumours, there's actually a Metal Gear Solid film currently in the works, apparently starring Christian Bale and Daniel Craig as Solid and Liquid Snake respectively. Strangely enough, this doesnt sound like such a bad idea. Bale can pull off the gruff voice of Snake, and Craig can do the cocky British accent Liquid is known for. Sounds good- a shame the rumor will probably be proven false though.

In other video game related film news, Universal Studios recently bought the rights to the game Asteroids, and plan to make a film of it. I'm going to repeat that: Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Atari game Asteroids, and plan to create a film about it.

Wait, what?

Yeah, it's strange. Of all the videogames out there, they chose Asteroids, that old arcade game where you have to rotate the little ship to shoot chunks of rock. It's hardly Hollywood material, but at least it doesn't have an established story for them to ruin.

I guess all we can do now is sit back and wait for the inevitable videogame tie-ins, like Metal Gear Solid: The Movie: The Game. My head hurts just thinking about it.

E3 2009: News from Nintendo

- Nintendo
To be honest, after Nintendo's conference last year in which they mostly talked about sales figures and such, we didn't have high hopes for this year. We assumed it would be more of the same, and boy, were we in for a shock!

Nintendo had more new game announcements than they knew what to do with. The first being the inevitable sequel to Wii Fit, titled Wii Fit Plus, which came as a surprise to nobody. What did surprise us though was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a completely new sidescrolling Mario adventure for the Wii, with multiplayer support for up to 4 players, and it looks like great fun. Not stopping there, they announced and showed off none other than Super Mario Galaxy 2, and it looks fantastic. Not to mention Metroid: Other M, Dead Space: Extraction, The Conduit, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, and one of the biggest surprises of the show, the return of a long lost franchise, Golden Sun for the Nintendo DS!

Nintendo blew us away with the amount of games they had on show, and all of them looked fantastic. They didn't even have time to mention Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, or Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, they just didn't have the time!
